TiO 15 – The Art of Relationship – The Lost Art of Loyalty

The Main Idea

Loyalty is not just about the faithfulness of a beloved dog, it is expected in the relationships that we have with other people and with God.

Warm Up Questions: (Choose 1 or 2)

Q1: What kind of pet do you think is the most loyal? Which is the least?

Q2: How many customer loyalty cards do you have, either physical or online?

Q3: Can you think of a personal example of loyalty in your own life, either given or received? Tell that story.

The Word

Read the main passages aloud: Hosea 3:1-5

The Lord said to me again, “Go, love a woman who has a lover and is an adulteress, just as the Lord loves the people of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.” So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer of barley and a measure of wine. And I said to her, “You must remain as mine for many days; you shall not play the whore, you shall not have intercourse with a man, nor I with you.” For the Israelites shall remain many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or teraphim. Afterward the Israelites shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; they shall come in awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.

The story of Hosea and Gomer show clearly how God sees unfaithfulness and how his faithfulness both provides security for us and eventual blessing when we return from unfaithfulness to faithfulness.

Q1: How do you define faithfulness/loyalty?

Faithfulness is so much more than the sexual part of our relationships but tends to be seen as a yes/no sort of thing. However, Jesus told us that giving in to desire is seen as the same as committing the physical act of adultery.

Q2: In addition to faithfulness and loyalty in the sexual parts of our relationships with our current/future spouse, what are other examples of faithfulness in relationships and how do they play themselves out?

Q3: Does faithfulness/loyalty mean the same as 24/7/365 availability? If not, how do you remain faithful/loyal even when you are not always available to others?

Prayer

Pray together that God would identify places in your life where you lack faithfulness and loyalty in your relationships: with God and with other people.
