TiO 15 – Alpha – How Does God Lead?
The Main Idea
God leads us in many ways. Hearing the voice of God is important, but equally (or more) important is what areas of leading are most important to him, and to you.
Warm Up Questions: (Choose 1 or 2)
Q1: Who do you go to for advice? If “it depends” then talk about some situations and who your go-to person is.
Q2: When you are decisions do you tend to plan or go on impulse and intuition? How successful does your decision-making method tend to be?
Q3: When making a decision, do you like a lot of options to choose from or only a few?
Read the scripture aloud: Philippians 2:5-8
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross.
Whether you believe that God has a specific plan for each area of your life or whether you believe that God only is concerned about whether our choices are sin, our primary obligation is to live our lives with a focus on being like Jesus.
Dennis pointed out three keys to a life lived to follow Jesus
- Make every decision in the context of “how will this make me more like Jesus?”.
- Learn to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit.
- Cultivate contentment in your life.
All of these are to be done in the company of others: in the context of community.
Q1: How can asking “how will this make me more like Jesus?” Change the way that you make decisions and the quality of the answers that you get to those questions?
Q2: What does the Holy Spirit sound like? Can you think of a time when you heard his voice or sensed his leading?
Q3: What does it mean to be content? Are there certain areas of your life where contentment is more more difficult to find than others? Talk about one of those areas.
Pray together that you could move towards living your whole life focussed on being like Jesus.
